Why Lutheran?

… yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

… I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me. I don’t reject the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”

— Galatians 2:16 – 20

We hold this central, unchanging truth of the bible: God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to be the sacrificial Lamb, to bear the punishment for the sins of the world. He died in our place to pay for them. Through that historical act, He purchased abundant life now and forever for all who believe in Him. He gave evidence of this in His glorious resurrection, which points to our new life and foreshadows our own resurrection.

Many non-Lutheran Christians would probably agree with much or all of this. So why would a person choose to be Lutheran, rather than something else?

Some of the reasons are mentioned in these stories of people who became Lutheran.

Christ at the center

… for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
