Your King Comes Righteous and Being Saved

Why is Jesus is ‘being saved’?

When we think about “being saved’, we attribute the phrase to ourselves, our souls. But Christ was saved too. It’s a perspective we don’t often ponder. But in today’s reading from Zechariah, the prophecy states “having salvation” or “being saved” in the Hebrew text .

Simply put, Jesus is being saved because he took our place. He assumed our debt; took on our sins. He went to the cross and died for us. He led a perfect life so that he could stand in our place.

Who saved him?

But if Jesus is being saved, who is doing the saving? Jesus is! His act on the cross was the cleansing act of redemption. His resurrection was our justification along with his own.

His Majesty is Unmet

It was Jesus’ work during Holy Week that is to be honored and why we celebrate Palm Sunday. His humble entry into Jerusalem was majestic because it led to our redemption. He knew what lay ahead of him and yet he persisted. Hosanna to our Lord! His love for us is beyond measure!

Thanks be to God for his gift of redemption and immeasurable love for us!

Today’s sermon is based on these passages from Zechariah 9:

⁹ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
¹⁰ I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and he shall speak peace to the nations;
his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from the River to the ends of the earth.
¹¹ As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
    I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
¹² Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
    today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Easter Sunday is next week! Please join us for the Divine Service at 10 am. Breakfast is at 8 am.

Holy Week: Please join us this week at 7 pm Monday-Friday as we follow Jesus to the cross. Each night will focus on a reading of the Passion history. We highly encourage you to join us as it is a refreshing experience to ponder the details of Holy Week. If you would like to worship via Zoom, please email Andrew Berg and he will send you a link.

Bible Study: Our midweek Bible study is on hiatus during Lent and will resume after Easter. Our Sunday morning class meets at 9:45 and is currently discussing the papacy.
